Hi! Who are you and what business did you start?

Hey, I am Aakash Patel. Founder of Unifold. We are a brand design agency that focuses on helping businesses/startups build their brand identity so that they can stand out in the marketplace.

What is your personal story and how did you come up with the idea?

In my childhood, I was always drawn towards art, painting, sports and technology. So I knew from the start that whatever I wanted to do in the future, it had to come from one of these domains. While moving forward, I really started enjoying solving people’s problems. During my bachelor’s degree, I used to pick several public problems and develop solutions for them.

In this process, I started branding my solutions into apps/websites and to create awareness of the solutions. I started social media marketing by sharing creatively designed posts. This began my interest in brand design. I noticed that many businesses were struggling to reach their target audience, customers and unable to communicate their strategy. So with that in mind, I thought to provide them with creative services that can boost their business and so far it’s been great helping them.

What challenges did you face when creating your product/service?

Getting into this new space, which I had no big idea of, was difficult in the start but I figured out several paths to tackle all the problems and made it my goal “to grow every single day”. At the start, the major issue I faced was around how to run this business successfully so that I don’t stop helping people reaching their customers. For that, I had to do all the work from designing to marketing/sales by myself and learned my way through it. I am still learning!

Who is your target market?

As it’s my goal to help businesses/startups build visually appealing and professionally stable brand Identities, I kept my target audience to ‘young’ and small to mid-tier businesses, who are unable to achieve the results of a well-branded business. If domains are considered, I have designed Identities for businesses I am passionate about like technology, sports, clothing and other creative startups. I have niched my business in that way to enter the market with a specific goal and this helps me resonates with my clients well.

How do you market your business and which approaches have been the most successful?

I consider “audience” as my market. For that, I share my journey with them through social media platforms and try to create some value for young people as well as businesses. Another method of marketing is being “Social”. I attend networking meetups often, and try to make as many friends as possible and connect with them on a deeper level. I am basically an introvert doing things out of my comfort zone.

Since you launched, what has worked in not only attracting but retaining customers?

Relations, bonding and passion. I help my clients with pure passion and aim to make their business grow with no compromise. Connecting with them during the process creates strong bonding which ties our relationship for longer.

What kind of culture exists in your company, and how did you establish it?

Creativity only comes when there is no pressure and pure freedom. That’s what I manage to keep in my surrounding. If we are here to help others grow, we should have a strong brand value in ourselves which resonates in our work.

What software, services or tools do you use within your business?

I believe in minimalism. The tools and resources used in our agency are Adobe Suite, and project management tools including TrackingTime and Slack (of course).

What are the most important lessons have you learned on your business journey?

The first and most important lesson I faced was figuring out the deeply embedded problems a business might have. It sometimes takes more time to find one than to fix one. I always try to make it my goal to improve my method. Maintaining a friendly, cool and free atmosphere is very important around your employees/peers, which I have learned over time. It must also be balanced with professionalism and integrity.

What is your favourite aspect of being an entrepreneur?

When your creative skills, (e.g. picking the right colours), help businesses to communicate their brand values, goals and purpose then what can be more amazing than that?! Jokes aside, getting to know that our brand design has helped a business reach their customers easily and the business is growing then that is what keeps me going every day, even if it’s Monday!

What is your LEAST favourite aspect of being an entrepreneur?

The fact that you can’t help everything (or everyone) that comes your way.

What books, podcasts or other resources have inspired and influenced your business journey?

The time I started reading books just changed me inside and out. I refer to many books, but few being my favourites are 1. Never Split the Difference by Christopher Voss and Tahl Raz. 2. The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy. 3. Creative Strategy and the Business of Design by Douglas Davis.

Where do you see your business 2-3 years from now?

Once we are into the market helping enough businesses with Identities and visual presence, we would like to grow into Brand Strategy, Social Media and Sharing more what we know.
